ThE TouRdABoYeTTeFranKenBikeTraiLBuiLd

A bike is a bike. A ride is a ride. But a bike, built from scratch, piece by piece is a work of art.

That's been my philosophy for years. As long as my son Kailan has been alive I have been riding bikes. 9 years now I have been a cycling fanatic, but my beginnings were humble. I got fat, very fat, and a friend invited me to go riding, I had a very junky huffy and I took it out and loved riding. Eventually I went to the pawn shop and bought a Motobecane. Rode that for a hot minute, felt like I was flying cause of the difference over a huffy, but my friend that worked at Bikeworks felt bad for me. He grabbed me by the shoulder one day and asked me to come back to the mechanic area of the shop. He said to me, "Frieds dont let Friends ride junk" and unveiled a specialized hardrock that he had built from scratch just for me out of spare parts from the shop. Yes it was all used parts, and yes it was a fully rigid 21 inch frame, but doggone it, I was stoked and I rode it till I bought an even better bike several months later.

Fast forward 9 years and it was time for me to pay it forward. I had a Jamis Eureka frame in my house, first bike I raced single speed, first bike that I ever built single speed, first bike I ever built from scratch piece by piece, first bike I ever podiumed on. And this frame has been laying around unused for 3 years. On the Swamp Club forum a young man named Johnny showed off his wal mart special and I figured, I need to donate my frame. Sandpine suggested I start a thread, and next thing you know it was the bicycle version of kill the man with the ball as we all dog piled to get parts together to build him a bike.

The 29th of November, I wanted to Tour Boyette, since I have never ridden there. I asked for guides and had about 10 volunteers. So in the spirit of Epic on daycations we coordinated to build the bike for him that day, and have him ride it with us.

It did take me waking at 4 am and driving a good distance, and it did take a group of people to make it happen, but when it was all said and done, I had finally paid off my karmic debt and returned the favor that was once bestowed to me so early in the sport.

Then we rode, and boy was it Fun. Boyette is worth the trip and there are miles and miles of FUN twisty up and down trails. Lots of flow and lots of great opportunities to put the hammer down with minimal effort. I simply loved the ride and loved the people I rode with.

Like Mucaro and I always do, eventually we started wearing the group out and one by one, people started heading back. Eventually Sandpine and I picked up on my third plan of the day, my first experience in trail working.

I want to build up the Naked Indian ride and add trails and build a little system for myself and my family and the entire county. But, in order to build, one must learn. And I believe in the process of apprenticeship and Sandpine offered me a great opportunity. So we had a great lunch and great conversation and then made our way over to the work area. I had my Ergon pack, and as always its interesting to note what I had inside:
1 pair of shorts
1 pair of shoes
2 tubes
tools
repair kit
2 cans of organic chicken
1 cup of almonds
1 zone bar
1 swiss knife.

We worked for 1.5 hours and then set out to hike the rest of the trail. When they are done with this system it will be tight. We then got back to the bikes suited up and rode 6 miles back out. When it was all said and done I had done 22 miles.

Then we went to the next phase of my adventure. Benji offered to have us come over and I needed to clean up, so Sandpine and I headed over there to sample his delicious homemade brew. After downing a couple and acquiring a good Buzz Sandpine headed home and Benji and I headed to the Chinese buffet. I ate all I could as well as some good sushi and then headed home.

Picked up the wife from work, watched Tropical Thunder, and then Laid her down for a righteous end to a righteous day.

Thanks so much to all who helped with the build, thanks so much to Sandpine and Benji for their hospitality, to Mucaro for letting me keep up with him and to everyone for tolerating my craziness, I know I am a bit much, but I mean well.

Enjoy the pics and the captions,

On ThIs DaY We FeAsT

That is the tradition after all.  But why feast?

Its a moment to celebrate the abundance of your years worth of hard work and effort.

Its a moment to celebrate the health and wellness and the gifts the creator has blessed you and your family with.

Today, spend it enjoying and thanking the people that you care for most for being there and for being a part of this Universe that you exist in.

Today, eat more than you normally would if you choose to, drink more then you would, if you choose to, eat dessert first, if you choose to.

But most of all, dont forget; All the wonderful blessings that you have.  This planet we travel threw space on, with all its wonderful creatures and natural beauties.  We, us humans, are truly a blessed race.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and for goodness sakes, Have fun!

Day 2 turned out to be the exact opposite of day one. Lots of busy road, lots of uphills and lots of wind.

That didn't take away from the beauty.

Instead of doing breakfast before the ride I recommended we roll our way all the way out to heathrow and eat there. Estimated distance 20 miles.

"Let's eat a couple of bars and depart and see what happens", " We can snack along the way".

The Bird was with it and off we went. Despite the traffic, She and I were both enjoying the ride and the effort, the weather was perfect. We kept the pace to our next destination swift, taking breaks along the way when necessary. The Bird had never pedaled up hills as long and as big as these, so pace was important. When we got to Sorrento, we stopped at a Pizza Place, refilled on water and kept Blazing the Tarmac towards Heathrow.

After many miles and some obvious suffering for the Bird, we made it to Lunch. At Lunch we straight up feasted and then rolled over to Cold Stone Creamery and had some Ice cream goodness. My estimates were off all day long, I had us pegged for 20 miles to that spot, ended up being 24 and I had us pegged for 17 miles home ended up being 22.

The bird was a sport on it all and we just managed to catch so much beauty once we crossed over into Volusia county and picked up on the Naked Indian route. The time of day we passed threw there and the way the sun was hitting the land created a buffet for our visual receptors. It was like Eye candy as we rolled threw the Gemini portion of the NK route.

Eventually, we could feel the temperature had dropped a few degrees and I gave the bird my jacket and we fired up the lights. Yesterday had been quick, but today with all the stops, we ended up getting caught by the twilight. As we made our way closer to home I could Hear the bird complaining, but still wanting to fight. Today had been very painful for her. The accumulated climbs, the longest Road Ride she has ever done as well as her first City to City Tour was all adding up. But at the end, she got that fire in her pedal stroke and put the hammer down and we rolled up onto our property feeling jubilant about the accomplishment and stoked on our success.

The trip had been magical, we had nothing but the most positive omens the entire way. Not a single mechanical problem or flat, things just could not have gone better. We saw 3 eagles and many hawks, and other birds.
My technology skills are improving and I packed alot and still kept it light. I was very comfortable along the way.

Suffessful trip I think our next Tour will be to Edgewater, where we will step it up and camp.

Pics are on the way,

TaiLwInDs and DoWnHillS

That is the absolute best way to summarize our day one trip of the Apopka tour. I didnt even break a sweat over the 40 miles we covered. The trip was only 3 hours long and the wind either pushed us or the road was downhill. Perfect. Our plans got sidetracked slightly when we ended up leaving three hours later then our original planned start, but in retrospect that was the right thing to do since, any earlier would of put us at our destination super early. We had a great lunch and I may have finally tasted the best pizza in the world pictures and further details are coming. This is a live field post, we are still in Apopka getting ready and deciding whats the plan for breakfast. The road home will be Plymouth Sorrento road which is a hilly beast and it should prove to be 100% more challenging then yesterdays route.
It will then take us on state road 46 into Heathrow where we will jump on the bike trail and get some cold stone creamery as a reward for the intense effort.
On a tech note the packing went perfect and only using a rear pack and my bd1 ergon pack we carried all we needed plus toilettries and shoes and civilian clothing. And I still managed to keep it light, easy peasy. Stay posted for pictures and for more write ups and details as the days pass. Turkey day is coming and I will have a five day weekend so the post will be frequent throughout the days.

RoAd TriP

My Wife and I are rolling out Saturday early. The mission, self supported bike tour to Apopka. Spend the night, then ride Hilly Lake county the next day home.

Should be good times.

The route will be mostly bike paths and urban singletrack(sidewalk in my speak), on Day one and on Day two mostly hilly roads.
I will be the Pack mule and carrying all of our clothing and supplies for our two day trip. The weather should be perfect to a little chilly luckily I have enough cold weather clothing to cover us both.
I will use my rear pack and my Ergon BD1(just for clothing) and we will ride out. An essential element of a good tour is destinations, preferrable somewhere you have never been.
This is stop 1:

Lake Jessup, were gonna explore just what there is to see at the end of this road. Hopefully we will find a nice spot to sit and chat and enjoy the sun for a little while.
Then we plan to do Lunch, hopefully find a place that offers food and beer which is good carbs for long rides. That plaza should have something, if not we will stomp around till we do find something.
Not long after a couple of good climbs later we will be at our destination, so we plan to maybe hit the movies and catch a flick.

Day 2, even more exciting, check back tomorrow for some Sattellite photos of that intended route.

Whats the point of all this? I guess to share what goes into my ride planning and the methods behind it, maybe encouragement for everyone to get out there and explore, you would be surprise the adventures you can have right out the front door without the burden of driving.
